RANDALSTOWN continued to show the benefits of their highly productive youth system as their Second XI, much changed from last year due to the departures of some players and others deservedly playing for the Firsts, produced a high tempo, thrilling performance on Saturday afternoon to overwhelm fellow championship contenders Lurgan 3-1 in County Armagh and hand them their first league defeat in 18 months.
With 11 teenagers in the squad of 13, it was the 'veteran', 21 year old Nicole Moore who donned the captain's armband and went on to produce a true captain's performance, winning tackles and distributing the ball excellently to build several attacks.
In the 11th minute Jane McGrillen's combination with Rachel Young on the left flank saw her fouled in the circle and from the resultant penalty corner, the Ballyclare High School trio of Lauryn Mawhinney, Megan Thompson and Vanessa Surgeneur delivered the perfect set piece resulting in the latter's strike rattling the backboards.
The game's pivotal point came in the 25th minute when the otherwise excellent Town defence was breached leaving the Lurgan centre forward bearing down on goal.
Town's debutant goalkeeper, Pamela Doreman, however proved equal to the task as she reacted quickly to firstly block the shot and then sweep up the rebound to clear the danger.
No more than 1 minute later McGrillen received the ball on the left wing after combining with Young again and, after, rounding three defenders delivered an excellent cross to Mawhinney who sidestepped the keeper and pushed the ball into the empty net to double the lead.
Into the second half and Town started the way they finished with Vicky Judah winning a penalty corner in the 39th minute after skilfully penetrating the Lurgan circle. This time Surgeneur played a crisp 1-2 with C J McDonald, a clever variation on the straight shot, which saw her collect the ball on the penalty spot and drive the ball home to make it 3–0.
Lurgan did manage a consolation goal in the 58th minute which their second period effort deserved but with Moore working overtime to protect the defence and Doreman looking assured in goals, the final whistle sounded soon afterwards and Town were deserved 3-1 victors.
An excellent performance and great 3 points for the seconds against a side who will make life difficult for all sides in Junior league One this season.
This performance in Lurgan though was made all the more poignant due to the death early on Friday morning of Keith Atkinson, father of Seconds midfielder Judith, after a long illness.
