RANDALSTOWN suffered their heaviest home defeat for many years at the hands of Grosvenor on Saturday, losing by 50 points to three.
Turning round at half time with a 9 point advantage Grosvenor notched up and incredible 38 points in a 20 minute spell in the second half to run out easy winners.

The scoreline doesn't reflect the possession and territory that the home team had but they ran up against a well drilled defence and once again couldn't transfer pressure into points.

The opening score came within minutes of the kick off. A high kick was fumbled by Randalstown on their own try line allowing Grosvenor to scoop up the ball and head gratefully over the line.

'Town continued to make defensive errors and after turning over ball on the halfway the Grosvenor outhalf went over in the corner. The next 20 minutes leading up to half-time saw the home team have their best period of the game.

With Foster, Keating and Wilson to the fore the forwards drove hard at the Grosvenor line. Centre Willie Montgomery was also finding holes in the visitors' defense but too often he was left isolated after a good initial break.

'Town's only reward for this pressure was an Adrian Johnston penalty on the half hour taking the half time score to Randalstown 3 Grosvenor 12.

The first ten minutes of the second half continued with Randalstown on top. Montgomery had another good break but was pulled up for a forward pass to Ivan Foster who was bearing down on the line.

Johnston then failed to convert a penalty before Grosvenor went on a scoring spree running in 6 tries, 4 of which were converted, in the next 20 minutes.

Randalstown still had plenty of possession and were pressing the Grosvenor line, but twice in the space of 5 minutes the visitors intercepted deep in their own 22 and went the length of the field to score under the posts.

Another hard week on the training paddock is on the cards for the boys from Neilsbrook.

Even with plenty of possession too often they failed to break the gain line from 2nd and 3rd phase play, and are getting into a habit of seeking bodies to run at rather than space to run into.

Plus points were the strong performances from Neil Foster and Dan Wilson in the back row and centre William Montgomery.

This Saturday the 1st XV are away to UUC in the 1st round of the Gordon West Cup while the 2nd XV travel to Armoy in the league.

Randalstown: V Thom, C Gamble, I Foster, W Montgomery, B Winters, A Johnston, A Park, R Loughlin, S Finlay, R Keating, M Asquith, D Millar, S Hyndman, D Wilson (Capt) N Foster.

Dates for the Diary - Saturday 27th September, Club BBQ; Friday 17th October - Texas Hold Em with Big Eddie.
