ANTRIM was this week a community united in grief following the death of little Anna Lee Clelland Harkin.
The 10-month-old baby died when a fire broke out at her Orkney Street home on Saturday evening.

The baby's mother, three young children and a man escaped the fire.
The man and a 5-year-old boy were treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

Deputy Mayor Adrian Watson visited the house.
"Friends and neighbours of this family are totally devastated for what's happened," he said.

"There's a stunned silence in the street, and I don't think words could describe what this young mother and her family are going through."
Leon Lambert, an eyewitnesses described how attempts to rescue the family were hampered by thick smoke.

"We ran up, and I tried to get up the stairs, but the smoke was that thick we couldn't even make it half way up. I tried it again and I still couldn't get up," he said.

"I got up to the window, opened the window where the fire was just to let some smoke out, to see if it would help any.
"My mum's boyfriend was at the other window where the baby was, he was trying to get that open. It just wouldn't happen though, the smoke was too thick."

Expressing his sympathy to the family, SDLP South Antrim MLA Thomas Burns said: "This was a terrible incident.
"It is every parent's worst nightmare.
I can hardly imagine a worse set of
circumstances to face - being trapped in a burning home with your young children.

It must have been absolutely
horrifying.
"The whole community is absolutely stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic accident.
"The family is completely devastated, as are their friends and neighbours. My deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to them."

He added: "I would commend the bravery of those residents who risked their own safety in an attempt to mount a rescue. The heroism of the firefighters who attended the scene is also worthy of the highest praise. These valiant and selfless people did everything they could."
Alliance South Antrim MLA David Ford has urged people to make sure that their fire alarms are in working order following this fire.

He said: "This is absolutely devasting news that such a young baby has died in a house fire. My thoughts are with the family and the community at this time.

"But I would call on people to make sure that we do not lose any more lives in house fires by making sure that their smoke alarms are in working orders.

"A working fire alarm can often be the deciding factor as to whether or not people are killed in house fires, so I would urge people to take this matter seriously."

Sinn Féin's Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has extended his condolences to the family.
Mitchel McLaughlin said: "I send my deepest sympathy to the mother Ursula, family and friends on the tragic death of baby Anna Lee Harkin in a house fire on Saturday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this harrowing time.

"I would also commend the bravery of the neighbours who at great risk to themselves attempted to enter the house to rescue Anna Lee."
